BETWEEN TWITTER AND FACEBOOK IS WIN

TWITTER FOR LIGHT INTERACTION WITH MOSTLY STRANGERS.

FACEBOOK FOR LIGHT TO SEMI-DEEP INTERACTION WITH MOSTLY FRIENDS.

NEITHER COVER TRANSACTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH STRANGERS THAT COULD BECOME FRIENDS.

THIS HOLE WHERE STARTUPS LIKE AIRBNB, SKILLSHARE, ZAARLY, LIVE.

SOMEONE NEED TO FILL HOLE.

INSTEAD OF DOZENS OF NETWORKS COVERING ONE TRANSACTION TYPE EACH, WORLD NEED SOCIAL NETWORK THAT DO ONE OF TWO THINGS:

A) COVER “FIND PERSON THAT DO X, MAKE DEAL”

OR

B) COVER LIGHT INTERACTIONS WITH WORLD (TWITTER), DEEP INTERACTIONS WITH FRIENDS (BETTER THAN FACEBOOK), AND TRANSACTIONAL INTERACTIONS WITH WORLD OR FRIENDS (EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN)

THAT SECOND ONE HARD. BUT IT WHERE WIN THE INTERNET IS.

SOMEONE NEED TO BUILD NOW, BEFORE GRIMLOCK DO.

Grim, that goes against everything we’ve learned about focus and a single product done right.

“MODEL RELATIONSHIPS LIKE THEM ACTUALLY WORK” PRETTY FOCUSED.

  • http://www.davidmcohen.com/ David Cohen

A network by which people formed relationships the same way we formed them back in kindergarten, or back on the playground in second grade, or when we played pee-wee hockey at age 8. We didn’t have the critical thinking skills back then to form relationships for the reasons they are formed today, but they were deep. That’s what I’m looking for.

Or, we you could just build your Plan B platform and that would probably work too.

NEXT STEP IN SOCIAL NETWORKING IS DEEP SOCIAL.

  • http://alexkinsella.com/ Alex Kinsella

Hi FakeGrimlock. Long time reader, first time commenter. Me like what you say. There’s a big opportunity to connect someone needing a good/service and someone that offers that good/service. The secret sauce is in “trust”. Are Facebook friends more trustworthy than Twitter friends?

    • FAKE GRIMLOCK

SOCIAL GRAPH, INTEREST GRAPH, BOTH USEFUL.

      ADD TRUST GRAPH?

      WIN INTERNET.

I’m pretty sure the trust graph is what Facebook and Google are both thinking about. I don’t think they’re succeeding though.

At that level, you have to start thinking thematically. Trust is a much more nuanced graph.

        For example:

I trust Fake Grimlock on startup advice, but not healthy eating advice.

I trust Barack Obama in politics, but not Rick Perry. Others might feel the exact opposite. (And I don’t trust Barack Obama for barbecue recommendations, whereas I suspect Perry might have some good ideas.)

A simple link in the graph doesn’t imply blanket trust. That’s a harder thing to represent – unless you boil themes right in and make them super-easy to work with from the get-go.

        • FAKE GRIMLOCK

          INTERSECT TRUST AND INTEREST GRAPHS.

ME INTERESTED IN BACON. FRIEND INTERESTED IN BACON. HOW US INTERACT WITH BACON RELATED INTERESTS CREATE MAP OF TRUST (LIKE SAME LINKS, VOTE UP EACH OTHERS COMMENTS, ETC.).

          • http://patrickfoley.com/about Patrick Foley

Is this in the right direction:
If I am one of only 10 people in the world interested in macramé bacon holders, I need to know the other 9 people (interest more important than trust). But millions of people in the world are interested in bacon, so I’m probably more interested in knowing out of those millions, which of my friends is interested in bacon.
Similarly, at a party, people have a tendency to go first to people they already know and network out from there (if at all). Pretty women and funny men are the most valued people in the room, so after my friends, they are the most valuable to me (hypothetically).
If I belonged to a club of a million people with the same interests, I want the thoughts from people who are part of my trust graph to be more prominent than other more random thoughts. After that, I want more interesting thoughts to be more prominent (perhaps by being voted up by others).
On the right track to the idea of intersecting trust and interest graphs?

trust and interest two very different things. can you outline your goal / project a bit?

In my backyard, Singaporeans can access government services online with an online ID called a Singpass. If we are going to get to the point where your online ID is so important that it can truly be considered to represent YOU online, this ID:
    1) Will probably have multiple local versions worldwide. I can’t, for example, imagine Chinese netizens using an American ID authentication service.2) Must have common standards. Similar to passports I suppose.Grimlock what do you think?

This is interesting. I’ve been playing around with the highlight app this weekend which I’m finding really interesting since it helps you find strangers who could become friends.

While it lacks a transactional motive, I still find it cool as an experiment.

  • http://openid.anonymity.com/yv5j4n Him

Do you see this as a distributed network or centralized one?

Build before Grimlock not enough. Must have adoption before Grimlock too. That even more tricky.

      Hey @wmoug:disqus
I am quite curious about this. Love Engagio, its a no-BS social dashboard for my mega-distributed digital life (thank you for building this btw). Wonder how might it work with Dollars & Deals?

      • http://engag.io/ William Mougayar

Thanks. What is D & D. Pardon my ignorance. Is there a link?

        • abhic

lol sorry it was just extrapolated from what Grimlock was talking about – transactional social network = dollars and deals and such.

          • http://engag.io/ William Mougayar

Ah. I missed that. well….we’re focused on the personal relationships side. in as much as it enables indirectly or leads to “business transactions”, then it fits, but we’re a commercial transaction network in that sense. But conversations enable relationships, and people that have relationships with each other end-up doing business with each other. That’s the essence in a nutshell.

          • abhic

Ah I see. I can definitely see Engagio becoming a hub of conversations & debatably that can lead to deals and such.

          • http://engag.io/ William Mougayar

I meant to say “…we’re NOT a commercial transaction network…”, but I hear you. There’s an indirect relationship. One fuels the other.

      simple.

  • jbrooksmartin

I think it starts with the interest graph. Then your affinity for those interests. Then engagement on that interest. Then expertise. Then influence and trust. Hard to tell the entire story without telling it all at once. Needs the be eased into, the overall story and the ux. I think it starts with getting your data out of your social networks and making it yours again, then using it. One day, every body will understand every thing. We’re building xen.com to be the universal interest graph.
